The detective

Melanie Roy, the partner who reads the silence

Melanie Roy is 34, born in Sherbrooke, now a homicide detective at Station 121. She runs five kilometres along the Lachine Canal every morning - rain or snow, the same route - because it’s the only hour of her day when no one needs anything from her. Her father was a construction worker who cooked on Sundays; she still calls him on Christmas to ask for the tourtière recipe, and the crust is never right.

She is Charron’s partner, and the sharper edge of the pair. She fills a spiral notebook with questions, not answers - twelve of them over her career - and she thinks the one thing a person can’t say is the thing that solves every case.

Medium portrait of a woman in her mid-thirties with dark hair in a high bun, wearing a black blazer over a plum blouse, holding a phone to her ear and looking down with an intense focused expression, in a dimly lit office at night.

Ten things about Roy you won’t hear on the tape

The case file is clean. The detective isn’t. Ten small rituals that make her who she is - and the one she can’t stop.

  1. 01

    How she starts the day

She runs. Five kilometres, rain or snow, always the same route along the Lachine Canal. It’s the only hour of her day when no one needs anything from her.

  2. 02

The one cup that keeps her going

Black, no sugar, from the coffee machine at the station. It’s terrible. She drinks it anyway, sometimes three cups before noon.

  3. 03

The meal she can’t quite make

Her father’s tourtière. He was a construction worker who cooked on Sundays. She’s tried to make it herself, but the crust is never right. She calls him on Christmas to ask for the recipe again.

  4. 04

What she reads when no one’s watching

Non-fiction about disasters - plane crashes, mountaineering accidents, ships that sank. She’s fascinated by the moment everything goes wrong. It makes her better at her job.

  5. 05

    The power she wishes for

To hear the one thing a person will never say. The thing they’re hiding even from themselves. She thinks it would solve every case.

  6. 06

What she does when she can’t sleep

She re-reads old case files. Not the closed ones - the ones she couldn’t solve. She’s memorized them by now, but she reads them again, hoping a new detail will appear.

  7. 07

    What she carries

A small notebook, spiral-bound, with a dented cover. She’s filled twelve of them over her career. The current one is almost full. It has questions, not answers.

  8. 08

    The habit she can’t break

Checking the time when she hears sirens. She calculates how long it’ll take to arrive, even on her days off. She doesn’t know how to stop.

  9. 09

    The sound that calms her

The click of the station door closing behind her at the end of a shift. It means she can leave the work inside. She never fully does, but the sound promises that she might.

  10. 10

The name she’d give a dog

Claude. After her father. She’d get a mutt from the shelter, something with grey fur, something that would follow her on her morning runs.

She fills the notebook with questions, not answers.

THE CROSSING · character note

Souvenirs

Three moments that shaped her path. A dawn on the lake, a badge in the golden hour, a finish line crossed with hope.

Voices from the cold

The sonic portrait of every soul in the story. Roy’s score is the one she plays on the canal at five a.m. - five songs about the wall you climb and the thing you can’t outrun.
