KAINO70 The Crossing

The Characters · Gilles Tremblay

The man who was there when it happened.

Fifty-six, Montreal born and Montreal stranded. He wakes wherever he slept, counts the days since he last drank, and holds his mother’s cracked rosary. The church bells at dawn tell him he’s still here. This is the man the city stepped around - and the witness they wished they weren’t.

The witness no one hears

Gilles Tremblay, who was there when it happened

Gilles Tremblay is 56, from Montreal, and living on the streets. He sleeps in the park by Notre-Dame. He can’t read - the words move on the page, and his teachers said he wasn’t trying, but he was - so he counts instead: his fingers, the days since he drank, the hours until he can again. He’s usually wrong on all of them.

He holds his mother’s cracked rosary when the cold gets inside him. The power he wishes for is to be seen - not famous, not important, just seen, for someone to look at him and not look away. In a story about a body found in the camp, Gilles is the one the city stepped around. And the one who saw.

Medium portrait of a weathered white man in his late fifties with grey stubble and a knit beanie, wearing a worn dark zip-up hoodie, standing on a snow-patched street flanked by police officers, his expression wary.

Ten things about Gilles you walked past

The file is clean. The man isn’t. Ten small rituals that make him real - and the one the city won’t look at.

  1. 01

    How he starts the day

He wakes wherever he slept - a bench, a shelter, a doorway. He counts his fingers. He counts the days since he last drank. He counts the hours until he can drink again. He’s usually wrong on all counts.

  2. 02

The one cup that keeps him going

Coffee, black, from the church basement. The nuns give it to him without asking for anything in return. He doesn’t understand why.

  3. 03

The meal he can still taste

His mother’s pâté chinois. She worked at a cannery in Quebec City. They were poor, but every Sunday she made it with real beef. He hasn’t eaten it in twenty years. He can still taste it.

  4. 04

What he does instead of reading

He doesn’t read. He can’t. The words move on the page. His teachers said he wasn’t trying hard enough. He was. He just couldn’t.

  5. 05

    The power he wishes for

To be seen. Not famous. Not important. Just seen. For someone to look at him and not look away.

  6. 06

What he does when he can’t sleep

He walks. The city is different at 3 a.m. - quieter, emptier, less likely to shove him out of the way. He walks until his legs ache, then he finds somewhere to wait for morning.

  7. 07

    What he carries

A cracked rosary from his mother. The beads are worn smooth. He doesn’t pray anymore, but he holds it when the cold gets inside him.

  8. 08

    The habit he can’t break

The drinking. He’s tried a dozen times. He’s stayed sober for months. Then something happens - a door closes, a face looks away, the winter gets too heavy - and he starts again.

  9. 09

    The sound that calms him

The church bells at dawn. He’s been sleeping in the park near Notre-Dame for three years. He knows the bells. They tell him he’s still here.

  10. 10

The name he’d give a pet

Minou. Just a cat. A grey one, maybe, that would curl on his chest and purr. He’d call it Minou, because that’s what everyone calls a cat. He’s never been good with names.

Souvenirs

Three moments a witness might carry. A woman with a fishing rod, a newborn in a hospital, a couple at their wedding. Things from before the truth. Gilles kept these long before he was part of it.

He doesn’t want to be famous. He just wants to be seen.

THE CROSSING · character note

Voices from the cold

The sonic portrait of every soul in the story. Gilles’ score is the radio that plays at dawn - five songs about the boy who ran, the fall that couldn’t be caught, and the witness who remembers. The playlist is tied to the shared THE CROSSING archive.
